When will Messi return from injury? Here’s the latest update

World Cup champion Lionel Messi will return before the end of the Major League Soccer season, Inter Miami coach Tata Martino said Friday.

So, when will Messi play again? The answer is still up in the air.

Messi won’t be available for Saturday’s Inter Miami match at home against FC Cincinnati, where his club needs a win to become the first MLS team to clinch a playoff spot this season.

But Messi has made a significant improvement in his recovery from a right ankle ligament injury this week, returning to the field for individual work. The next step would be a return to practice with teammates, in a process Inter Miami won’t rush.

‘There is no estimated date because we have to start to see how he feels as he starts to train on the field,’ Martino told reporters about Messi on Friday.

Martino, then, expressed that Messi would return eventually while the MLS season heads into its final stretch before the MLS playoffs.

‘The work is planned by the medical part with the physical trainers. But yes, he returns before the end of the regular season,’ Martino said of Messi, the two-time Copa America champion.

How to watch Inter Miami vs. FC Cincinnati live stream?

Inter Miami returns to action Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET against FC Cincinnati at Chase Stadium. The match is available via MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.

How many games has Messi missed this season?

Messi will miss his sixth game since suffering the ankle injury during the Copa America final on July 14 in Miami, and his 12th game since he left Inter Miami to join Argentina for the tournament.

Overall, he’s played in just 15 of 33 matches across all competitions for Inter Miami this season. Messi also played in five of six Copa America matches with Argentina, sitting out one match to rest a groin injury.

The latest on Messi’s ankle injury

Messi won’t leave Inter Miami to join Argentina for two World Cup qualifying matches on Sept. 5 and 10 to continue his recovery.

‘It was foreseeable that he would not be with Argentina because he is not yet in a position to play, but we continue to see him develop,’ Martino said of Messi.

Inter Miami has nine games remaining during the regular season which lasts through mid-October. The team leads the MLS Eastern Conference with 53 points – five points ahead of FC Cincinnati, and 10 points ahead of the third-place Columbus Crew.

Columbus Crew and LAFC will meet in the Leagues Cup final on Sunday, in a rematch of the MLS Cup last season.
